7 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE & CELEBRATION The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the Volcano Post Office and proceed for one half mile along Old Volcano Road to Cooper Community Center, featuring the Hawaii County Band, floats, antique cars, fire engines, bicycles, horses, and animals in costumes! 14 FOURTH OF JULY INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE The theme for this year's 4th of July parade is "Celebrate Freedom!". Grand Marshall will be Frank H. Sayre. The parade will begin at 5:30pm at the Kekua'okalani Gym and follow the traditional route from the Kona Gym along KuakiniHwy.to Palani, down to Ali'i Dr., along Ali'i Dr. to Coconut Grove Marketplace. Announcing stations will be at Kaiwi and Kuakini (West Hawaii Today), King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, Splasher's Grill, Pancho & Lefty's, Kimo's/Uncle Billy's (with a magic show at 5), Waterfront Row (with music at 5), and Rio's at Coconut Grove Marketplace. 58 entries, including 3 Color Guards, some horses, some dogs, community groups, music, lights, and even some candidates running for office. 15 MAUNAKEA LECTURE SERIES CELEBRATES THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ASTRONOMY 2009 The public is invited to attend The Maunakea 2009 Lecture Series, free monthly lectures throughout 2009 hosted by ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and W. M. Keck Observatory to introduce Hawai’i astronomy and the latest research being done by the thirteen observatories located on the summit of Maunakea. The Maunakea 2009 Lecture Series is the first of many activities planned locally to commemorate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009), a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, with events happening worldwide in 135 countries. The opening speaker in the 2009 Series is Chad Kalepa Baybayan, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s Navigator-in-Residence, whose presentation will be Thursday, January 15 at the W. M. Keck Observatory’s Hualalai Learning Theater in Waimea and Saturday, January 17 at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s planetarium in Hilo. Both programs begin at 7 pm and space is limited to first-come, first served. Lectures at the Imiloa Astronomy Center will happen the 3rd Saturday of each month and lectures at the Keck Observatory Headquarters Hualalai Theatre will happen the 3rd Thursday of each month with one exception, the month of February the lecture will happen on the 4th Thursday.
16 FIREWORKS OVER KAILUA-KONA Fourth of July fireworks will start at 8:30 p.m. at Old Airport State Park. The Park will close at 6 p.m. - watch the fireworks from Kailua Village after the parade, or watch from Makalapua Center (Macy's, movie theaters, KMart). Or park in Kona's Old Industrial Area and get some good exercise by walking to the soccer field near the Kona Gym and Pool...bring lawn chairs or blankets. Swing Zone will be closed. Please kokua, be patient, enjoy our wonderful community members, and prepare that traffic will be slow. Please drive with care--keiki and adults sometimes walk in the street. Please take any trash with you. Enjoy the patriotic music with the fireworks--tune to LAVA105.3 FM. Mahalo to the many generous local sponsors who funded these fireworks!
